Hello all!!!
My name is Ms. R I am a science teacher in Newark, NJ. I mainly teach at schools having students below or at the poverty line. I am a part of a movement that works to bridge the achievement gap, that works to provide educational excellence to ALL children, thus working towards the goal that One day, all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

To that end, in my classroom I am working on giving students hands on experiences with science. My method of doing that is to introduce science topics and provide real extension opportunities via the study of marine biology, in class created marine ecosystems.

My students will learn and apply their science content via marine husbandry and doing 'their part' to increase education of the public towards marine sustainability efforts.

So far we are in our 'building phase' of the class projects.

For the individual classes:

Our goal is to have a set up of 10 g nano tanks (one per class:4 ) that are designed towards our major themes.
Such themes are:
Anemones and Clownfish
Frilly LPS
Stoic SPS
Crazy Fish

Each class will be able to design their own theme with consultation with teacher and through their own independant research.
Each tank will start with a basic 10 g design.

In addition to this we will have a 45 g community tank that will be for the enjoyment of the entire school body.

The culmination of the project hopes to have a community outreach component where the youth host an educational mini-conference for their parents and friends (community).

The students are pretty excited about this build, mainly because I'm really excited about it!
Every chance we get we discuss environmental sustainability, and environmentalism, and I share stories of distant lands, SCUBA experiences, and of course my home tank.
Needless to say, I have 'brain-washed' my kids into loving something I love and they are looking forward to becoming responsible scientists and parents.

A bit of background on the school:
Weequahic H.S. is located in Newark, NJ. We are near 1,000 strong as a 'zone school' in an urban school district. We have an Allied Health theme where we have designed some of our programs to cooperate with the University of Medical and Dentistry of New Jersey for our students to gain college credit.
The school has a student body where 70-80% of the students are on the reduced price breakfast/lunch program. There are many initiatives in the school as well as the city that were made to create safe havens for students to join instead of the local gangs that lend fuel to the cities intense issues.
The students here, as well as myself would really need and appreciate your time and consideration.

I leave this post for now, just to share some words with you.
I will be back to edit and update you as to our edeavours as soon as I can. Feel free to post any questions, comments and or concerns you may have about...anything!

Sounds like a great project.
Could have started it 14 years ago in my area so I could have joined in the class while I was in school. I promise I wouldn't have minded at all :)
