These are a few of the photos from the Sample Collection and Necropsy Techniques lab. We were taught, and got to do hands on: anesthetize a fish, draw blood samples, take gill, scale, fecal samples as well as scrapings. We also learned how to administer injections.

We got to work on fish from tiny tetras, seahorses, eels to sharks...and some unique fish

We were also given the choice to anesthetize a fish or to euthanize a fish to do an exam.

This was a fish that I choose to anesthetize and do samples on. This 'perfectly' healthy upon visual exam had ich present in the gills.

I those of you that know me thought I was PITA about preaching quarantining before this course...

Looks like someone used photoshop and put a human smilely face on him.

And thank you for shareing this. Would be nice to have the time to go to some classes like this.
I've never seen anyone do something like that to the fish, are they still alive with that tube while they are on the sponge? I'm guessing they are with water flowing over their gills.

We used a larger dose MS 222 to initially sedate the fish in a container.

For longer procedures water has to flow through the fish's gills. The fish was administered a lower dose of MS 222 in that water to keep him asleep.

The eyes were protected by putting on ophthalmic ointment. After we moved the fish to a container of water and manually moved them to wake them up.

Well, I can tell Linda had a fantastic time there. Good for you Linda. Though I hope you were paying attention in class rather than taking pictures all day. :D

Well sir, Dory can focus when she needs to...she isn't always distacted or even distracted. :10:
