Ditto's I voted BB to same here works best for me too, the only thing I miss about my DSB is the buffer benefits.

Great observation Doc. I too voted "no" for that reason. Sand...Coral's a different story.

Guess Im the Lone Stranger...I voted shallow sand beds. I like the BB concept and it eases maintenance for sure but it just looks too sterile until the coralline has covered the bottom and "waiting" aint one of my better qualities...in fact its not a quality at all!

I'm with ya on that one. I personally like the look of sand to a BB.

I have a bottom dweller in my tank that needs sand. So I always keep sand in there.

I 100% agree i don't like the coralline all over the bottom i like the shallow beds too.

yeah I never thought I'd say this because I've always been a sand man myself, but some times you have to take the good with the bad, since I went BB,my parameters pretty much stay right were I want them, I always had very low traces of nitrates and phosephates but they were there, BB I have 0readings because I can control my debris, and my clean up crew doesn't have to be as big so in terms I have even less waste of those animals in my tank when I up grade to a bigger tank I get no spikes because I don't have to worry about my sand bed being stirred up and disrupting it.
I use a poly board on the bottom of my BB and coraline is a pretty easy clean up.
but I do have to use a calcium reactor to help buffer my calcium and such.

Deep here as well. I have went crushed coral , no ugfilter. Went c/coral w ugf. and even a 125 dsb at each end, and c/coral w/ugf in center. And my easiest most stable cleanest looking is a dsb.

I prefer a shallow bed. BB's are nice but not natural looking in my opinion.

Like the looks of sand, but I've had better luck keeping an sps system (acros in particular) with a BB (actually, white starboard bottom).

With enough coral growing in there, no need to focus your eyes on the bottom!

I love the deep sandbed! Granted I've only had my tanks 13 mos, no problems yet. I also like the looks.

I started out thinking I wanted to plan purely a frag tank, no sand, just eggcrate, flow and light optimization. Then I found that I liked the neat look and interesting creatures and processes and 'look' that could be created (or rather that you can't control a DSB) using a DSB.

I decided to go 'halvsies'. The LR is arranged on top of the bed as if it were all rubble (instead of being stacked on top of each other in a pile it is placed independantly, no stack/touching). I like seeing random worm holes, weird colors on the sand, etc.
