Hrmmm.. this came as a shock to me, I was in the fish store the other day trying to grab some live rock, and remembered that I needed a handful of macroalgae as well... well, when I asked the guy if I could get some macroalgae he told me I was crazy and that it was illegal..

This is awkward, I've boughten macroalgae before from other fish stores in the past, was this law just recently passed?

Did anyone else know about this ? :eek2:

Not all macroalgae is illegal in California, but all caulerpa is. It will eventually be everywhere in the states, probably. There was a debate about it in the following thread. Most of the info is at the end.

Just looked at that... why would the caulerpa be illegal everywhere in the states? Shouldn't it only be in the ones that have access to saltwater? I mean, I live in Colorado. There isn't any way for me to release it into the wild and have it live. It'd be in freshwater anywhere within a couple of days driving distance of here, and I doubt it'd do any harm there(other than rotting or something, eew)

Because the suppliers would be in the coastal areas. There was a show about the effects on either Discovery and PBS that I saw a while back. This stuff can wipe out a reef in no time and California has been fighting it for quite a few years now. It doesn't take a lot to get it into the ocean, in one case it was introduced by doing water changes.

That would make sense :) Thanks. I guess I'll really stay away from the caulerpa now, since there's a chance I'd be able to move back to FL soon(possible, not likely...)

Welcome to California, where if its not regulated yet, I assure you they are hard at work figuring out a way to!

Sorry just venting a little as I lived there for a few years and its left a bad taste in my mouth. Great place to visit...just dont want to live there again. But man do you have some great dealers there to get cheap live stock from!!!

Its unfortunate, but this is a case of irresponible aquarist doing stupid things screwing it up for the rest of us. Of course California aint the only place that has this problem. The mash area north of San Diego was pretty well populated with macro algae but the last report I got was they were having some success iradicating it. This law has been on the books for a while not sure of the exact length, but its been at least 4 years.

if im correct this is the algae that has invaded coastlines, and is illegal, which i think is pathetic.. just because its invading our coastlines doesnt mean it should be illegal, thats just how mother nature works ya know?

Actually the problem is that mother nature didn't dump it in the coastlines to begin with. ;)

Welcome to California...

Yes there are some forms of Macros that are legal, finding it is another question though...You best bet is to order online.
