(I put this in the DIY forum because I’m doing it myself)
What’s going on everyone, as a few of you know I’m new here, and to the whole saltwater world... I’m custom Building a tank, and in order to make it properly I wanted to check with the experts here about glass thickness... Seems like 1/2" thick would be fine for my plan but want to make sure with you all... maybe get some tips from everyone...

here are the 2 dimension I’ve been kicking around

ball park of 415gal, 56"l x 36"d x 46"t
or
ball park of 314gal, 56"l x 36"d x 36"t

I figure a good 1/2" thick tempered glass would do me fine, but I want to make sure... I’m a computer specialist in the USMC not a glass or aquarium specialist... That’s why I’m asking for help... Id greatly appreciate some responses today since I would like to begin the project tonight...

Thanx Everyone
Crosis

l = Length
d = deep/depth/wide
t = tall/height

the larger tanks measurements with 1/2" thickness taken into account

Bottom = 55"l x 36"d
Left Side = 47 1/2"l x 35"d
Right Side = 47 1/2"l x 35"d
Front Side = 56"l x 47 1/2"d
Back Side = 56"l x 47 1/2"d

bottom will be flat down, left and right side will be on top at their respectful sides... the front and back will be placed on top of the bottom and its edges will over lap the sides...

a wooden border/frame will also be attached to the bottom and top for support, and a custom stand and top are also being designed...

Did some talking with the local glass shop here and they said 3/8" clear tempered glass with machine polished edges would be a good choice to go with... will be in the ball park of 415 gal, plus or minus a few gallons... a little less then $1000 for glass alone, should be here in 4 - 5 days... I'll keep everyone posted I’m going to start the stand now so when everything gets here that should be finished... I’ll take pictures of the stand as I go... tips would be appreciated... thanx everyone...

It sounds like you've answered all your own questions! Quite a tank you're planning there! And to think my 24" deep tank is hard to aquascape for me; you'll be scuba diving in yours! I wish you the best of luck, and look forward to seeing your progress.

Thanx for the support everyone I appreciate it... Yeah its gona be fun... Im going to have some live fiji rock in it when i start off but I've also been reading the DIY Live rock and I think it would be interesting to make my own rocks and designs for the tank... Im still deciding on what type of filtration system Im going to use...

I also am not an expert in this subject but I will through my .02 in anyway. I would think that a tank that size should be drilled. You can not drill tempered glass. I would suggest a 1/2 inch bottom of reular glass and have it drilled prior to assembly.
I know this will take more time and alot more planning but look on the bright side. It should not cost anymore for thicker untempered glass.
Good luck I will look forward to following your progress.

I appreciate the post newtofish, but I’ve already ordered and paid for the glass...

I’ll get the artist in the family to draw up some legible diagrams for me to post on here and see what you all think later tonight...
