My tank is over heating here in Australia its summer and my tank hasnt been through a summer yet does any one do how i could cool my tank down ive got 2 fans onto it and i was thinking of freezing some tank water to place into the water and let it melt

Does any one have any good ideas

Im thinking now that i might have to get a chiller  just have to find the cash$$$$ :-p

How high is the temp going during the day and wha temp is it when the lights first come on in the morning. Floating a ziptop bag with a few ice cubes in it will lower the temp for you, but you need to do it gradually so you don't stress the tank inhyabs too much. As you've already realized, a chiller may be the best bet.

I agree with sugar....you could also add a few more fans....i have fans in my canopy and also in my sump....it help lower the temp about a few degrees but its not enough if the air temp is 85 degrees. i ran my tank over the summer at 80 degrees and 78 on winter. you could also run an ac in the room where your tank is...much expensive than getting a chiller though.

A chiller is going to be a wise investment in your situation.

I think i will buy a chiller soon, also temp in the morning is around 25-25.3 degrees C and in the late afternoon it gets up to 27-27.2 degrees C ( i dont know what that is in your degrees F ).

Thanks for your comments

25C is 77F. 27.2C is 80.96F.

Personally, I wouldn't worry one bit about an 81 degree tank. I set my heater for 80. There are varied opinions, as in every aspect of this hobby, but I have even seen it recommended that reefs be kept higher, as in 82-83 (which would be 27.78-28.33 C).

Also, a three or four degree swing over the period of an entire day should not harm corals or fish at all. A sudden swing might cause stress, but slow changes won't.

Do you have a sump or refugium set up?

You could of course add fans for the summer which would cosmetically look odd but would prolong your tank until you get a chiller.

You could also do the ice but it might alter the temp too fast. I would say your temps are fine. I asked if you had a sump or refugium set up and wondered when you had your lights on? If you were not running them opposite of each other you could try that to lower the amount of light heat on it during the day. Just a thought... :)

I think Conni is right. Mine runs about the same temp. Ive set the chiller to start only when the tank temp reaches 84 I've seen the tank reach 82 then 83 on the hottest day. However, I did have some issues before I moved to my current location and I had my tank setup on the side of the hose that recieves evening sun. Perhaps moving your tank to the side of the house that recieves only morning sun would do the trick. Best of luck.
