Hey everyone, I'm just starting my first saltwater tank  . I have a 47 gallon acrylic. I am stationed in Japan right now so I don't want to put to much in the tank since I won't be here permanently. I'm sure I will be posting some questions in the near future.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I am stationed at Misawa AB, which is at the norhtern tip of the main island. It's kind of separated from all the other bases in japan. I wish I was down in Okinawa right now. We just got our first snowfall today. There are a few LFS's in the area, but not many of them have live rock. And the ones that do it is very expensive. I might just have to bite the bullet and pay. I just saw a thread about making your own, I might go that route and buy a few pieces of live rock to populate the rock that I make.

If you can make some of your own, then that would really cut down on the cost. It only takes a few pounds of LR to seed base rock. If you don't feel like making your own, then look into buying some base rock along with a few pounds of LR. Base rock is generally about 1/2 the cost of LR.

What are some good online stores for base rock?

I would recommend reeferrocks.com as capt jer has a great supply of base rock. Here are some images of some when he sent it to me.

Here is a pic of my order on the way from reeferrocks.com it is 50 lbs of base rock.

It is just one place of many.

I got some from hirocks.com and it worked well. Shipping for rock to Japan might be incredibly outrageous. We have a member named Funkybozu who lives in Japan. He hasn't been around here in a while, but you might try to send a personal message to him to see how he gets his supplies.

I just bought 60lbs of base rock from hirocks.com on ebay for $40 plus $20 for shipping. I hope it is worth it. I'll post pics when it comes in.

Well, I'm back and I finally have my tank set-up and running. It's been cycling for about 2 1/2 months now. I just added 3 blue/green chromis and 5 snails. I've got about 100 pouds of base rock and one piece of live rock I got from a local japanese pet store. Here is a pic of what it looks like right now.

Please let me know what you think of my aquascaping job. Took quite a few tries and alot of piecing together stuff from my wife and I, but I think we like it.

Welcome back buddy !

On the aquascaping job, I would say well done.... however that big piece of rock in the middle of the tank looks out of place to me !

Just my opinion

Enjoy
