I got my Hippocampus capensis seahorses on Sunday, and they are a little bit big for the 10 gallon.

I am going to be upgrading to a 20 gallon soon, and I am going to use the samefilter, rocks, hitches, and everything except the substrate.

The substrate I have now is a gravely stuff, and is so ugly, and causes a dust storm, because I didn't rinse it.

Also, I am not planning on cycling the new 20 gallon, since I am using the same stuff from the cycled tank.

Would it hurt the cycle to use a new kind of substrate?

Would live sand hurt?

Brock

You'll probably see some kind of cycle regardless. I would switch the sustrate based on what you posted, you need to make sure that you'll be able to care for the SH's while the new tank settles, so plan carefully.

Someone over on www.seahorse.org told me to add the new sand to the tank, but put the old gravel crap in a small tupperware container, in the tank, so it will still act as a biofilter, then, when some bacteria settles on the new sand, take the old crap out.

DO NOT CLICK THE ABOVE LINK FOR SEAHORSE.ORG, THIS WEBSITE HAS BEEN HACKED, AND YOU WILL SEE NASTY, PICTURES, AND COMMENTS!!!

I just logged into SH.org and that's a shame, hopefully they'll be able to recover everything

Brock, you got some good advice. I would suggest though that you put the old substrate in a nylon stocking and lay it onto of your new sand for about a month or so and then you can remove it. You shouldn't see a cycle since you're reusing your old filters. Good luck!
