i'm currently upgrading my 37 gallon to a 60 gallon and i wanna get a hippo tank for the established tank , maybe around january. i'm also setting up a QT tank and i will monitor the tang from a LFS that i have a good relationship with. if the tang does not show sign of ich around 2-3 weeks at the LFS and my tank has never gotten ich, can i shed-off some weeks or days off the QT process if he does not show signs of ich once in the QT. i wanna put him in the QT but the only thing that scares me is if the Tang brings ich with him, cause last time i checked ich doesn't hibernate in a tank right? anyone have any tricks or good advice on acclimating a new Hippo tang, anything would be of much help! thanks!

I would say don't get this tang....a 60 gal tank is to small for it and these tangs need at least a 6 ft long tank.... 100 gal min....size tank...
See you don't even have to worry about ich now!!! :)

the main reason tangs are so exceptable to Ich is because tangs are a open water fish. and easily get stressed. the best way to keep from having your Hippo come down with Ich is to keep it as stress free as possible.slow acclumating to the main tank. Best is a slow drip so it can slowly ajust to the new water it will be hosting in.
lots of swimming space. but in the same sence good areas for him to hid in. as a juvenile they are very shy, but usually get along with most tank mates but is always best to add to the tank first if your going to have other fish in there that tend to be aggressive.
and a good diet, and stable water conditions.
further more if your going to have him in a 60 gal tank, it would be best to use a sump so you could put most of your LR in there if your going to use LR for your filtration. this way you can provide him with a good wide open space to swim in. Min is usually 100 gals for this type fish.

you bet me doc. yeah what doc said is the best way to go.
I usually don't like saying you can't because over the years in this hobby I have seen lots of "you shouldn't do that". work very well the best thing is to understand it's needs and over address it .so to speck.
but then again you don't want to host a spotted grouper in a ten gal tank either....lol.

I would have to agree with the others on this fish. Here is an article on ich and how to prevent it everyone might find interesting. Also, stress does not cause ich, but allows any ich that might be present to be able to attach since once a fish is stress the mucus lining that helps protect it is reduced. Good luck!
