Now if anybody has any doubt that you should make sure your electrical connections are as safe as possible....

That is a little scary!!! It seems that even a circuit breaker that is functioning right would have tripped with a heat build up that would have caused that????

I would also love to know why the main braker didn't trip.

Do you have the link for that post?

However, I use a GFI as the first recepticle for the tank's pump connections. That way if any pump shorts out along the line, it will shut the entire system down to avoid a possible short circuit of the rest.

Everyone should have a Ground Fault Recepticle in the general area of the tank that controls all the plugs around it.

Damn i doubt it was a short looks like in the tank you can see what looks like 2 MH bulbs probably mounted to wood or something fell on them and caught fire fire appears to have come out of canopy and spread......no gfci is gonna stop that if you look at all commercial MH fixtures its all metal and no wood thats why when i talk to people about mounting MH retros to mount them aluminum or steel if they can or to at least put something to space the bulb and reflector away from the wood

I would guess the fire started behind the tank. If you note the sand is coming from the back.

I just think he should have had a bigger tank, that way when it broke it would have but the fire out.

I'll fetch the link. If you browse through RC, you'll find LOTS of horror stories like this, people loosing homes is not unheard off.

All I can say is OMG that is why when I get back in to the house after the x moves out I plan on putting a seperate breaker box on the tank so something like that shouldnt ever happen.

Yikes! Both my tanks are running on GFCI outlets. The 2.5 is on one of those low trip power strips and it drives me nuts because occasionally when I go to switch the lights off on the tank, it'll trip my GFCI outlet.
