I have an emperor 400 on my 70 gal FOWLR tank. I have everything I can think of, but there is some sort of "rattling or vibrating" noise coming from it. It seems to be coming from inside the motor area. It's pretty irritating. Has anyone had this before and more importantly, how do I get rid of it???

Many thanks in advance...

Mick

You can download the owner's manual from the above page. There should be troubleshooting help in it.

I have one on my 75 gallon reef, and I think it just does that. Mine does anyway...

Sometimes some debris gets stuck in the impeller housing. TAke the impeller out and clean it throughly.

I think it's a good idea to take all epuipment out of the tank and give it a good scrubbing every couple of months. JMO

It is really easy to do also. Take it out and pinch the two pieces that stick out in the back together and it all slides out and you can clean it.

It sounds like you have the propeller off just a bit.

Clean it and you will have no problems. Mine is really quiet.

Thanks for the help, I can't get to it until this weekend, but I will take it apart and clean it.

I took everything apart and cleaned it with a brush. Not really anything stuck in the propeller, pretty clean actually for over a years worth of use.
However, after putting everything together, it still makes the same vibrating type of noise. I have tried pressing things, sliding the intake tube up & down, turning it off & on, but it still makes a vibrating type of noise. It's not the filters. Does the rubber end caps come off the shaft? I tried to pull them off, but didn't want to break anything, so I left them alone. I know when I had my aquaclear for fw, they both came off.
Any help would be appreciated, the noise is irritating.

Thanks,

Mick

when I had an emperor, I know mine would rattle some if forgot to open up my gate if I changed my filters. or sometimes I would have to play around with it sliding it up or down a bit. Myself I got tried of playing with it and got rid of it. and started using Aquaclear. IMO I think the aquaClear
works better you a restricted to using the one type of filter media they provide, were AquaClear is wide open to use what ever media you want to use.
Plus once I went from FO to FOWLR. I dropped the Bio wheel off my Emperor. my LR was all the filteration I needed and the wheel on the Emperor is nothing but a Nitrate factory.
