Hi, i was wondering if there are are any small puffers such as a toby puffer that can go in a 55g reef tank? Would it eat corals or other fish such as gobies? If not, then can i keep it in a 10g or 20g sump because i known someone who has a trigger and a big puffer in there sump.
Thanks

Well there are a few small puffers that would fit in a 55. The wierd thing is, it just all depends on your inhabitants. They will eat every shrimp and prob. every snail also. I'll give ya some links.

Tobies and all puffers will eat all inverts...corals, snails, shrimp, crabs ect...
A toby would be fine in a 30g sump, with lots of LR for munching, but not a 10-20g.

I wouldn't keep a puffer in a reef tank if you are going to keep inverts...and I wouldn't put any fish in a sump...personally....If I can't keep fish in a display then I don't get them...To much going on in a sump...I add chemicals in the sump...dose kalk in there and I don't need a fish getting the chemicals before they are mixed good in the sump.....JMHO.... :)
Yes, That is a good point.

ok, so your your saying that a puffer in a sump might die from the chemicals because right now i dont have a sump so i dont really know about the chemicals that you put in it? I want one but i cant put it in a 55g with all the inverts so thats why i was thinking about putting it in a sump, but i also dont think the sump will be larger than 20g. Well if there are no aggresive fish i can keep in the sump, then can i put in a few Mantis Shrimp? Can a couple of "Neogonodactylus Wennerae" stay together?
Thanks

MattTheFish - You really can do what ever you would like...I am just saying that I don't put fish in a sump...I have a skimmer in there....and that is where I add the chemicals...ca, buffers, kalk, etc...and the turbulence in the sump help make sure that these are mixed well in the water before going into my tank...I also do not keep fish in my refugium....keeping fish in there defeats the purpose of a refuge!!!! If you want to keep aggressive fish then set up a FOWLR tank and house those kinds of fish....other wise do a reef....you can't do it both ways....it isn't fair to the fish or the other critters.... ;)
