They are a type of sponge. I forget the name at the moment. And, yes, they can take over. I had a bunch in my tank for a while. They have mostly disapeared at this point though.

Are they harmful, or should I leave them where they are?

I beleive they are q-tip or pineapple sponges. Perfectly harmless little filter feeders. I had a number of them on a rock until a Damsel desided to eat lunch.

I agree. They are Scypha ciliata (http://www.horta.uac.pt/species/Porifera/Scypha_ciliata/Scypha_ciliata.html) (aka Q-Tip and Pineapple sponge). I had a bunch of these early on in my tank's life, however, they have died back as the tank matured, and nutrients decreased.

Let's just call it a calcerous sponge. No point in taging names if we really can't ID them. :)
