venturi injector

What is this really and I could use a picture of one!!! I need to know for a skimmer I will make for when I get my reef tank going and its driveing me crazy. Thanks Also its a Venturi skimmer and do you think a Quiet one pump model 1200 will work?

A Venturi is a device that accelerates a fluid past a hole to induce a vacuum and draw in another fluid.

Kent Marine makes a nice venturi that can be found on the web for $16 or so.

Unless you really understand how a skimmer works and you REALLY know what your doing I would just buy one. I'm making a HUGE skimmer that is saving me a ton of money. But I made 2 small skimmers before hand and they went through many revs before I got it right.

thanks for letting me finally understand. I have a page on my other computer that has a perfectly described venturi style skimmer that is 4" in diameter and 2 feet tall. Skimmers isn't really that hard to understand, easy if you look at the red sea models. Thanks!

Well just remember the Devil is in the details.
Anyone can put air bubbles in a tube.

It takes a lot of fine details to make the skimmer effecent and work good.

I was gonna ask, can I do it from a powerhead or do I really need a external pump for structure?

Kent recommeds a Mag Drive 9 to power there venturi.
I don't think a power head will have enough power to run it.
I use Mag 7's on my skimmer.

i use this skimmer http://cgi.ebay.com/PROTEIN-SKIMMER-AQUARIUM-VENTURI-FREE-PUMP-JEBO-99_W0QQitemZ7708155617QQcategoryZ46313QQrdZ1QQcmdZ ViewItem it produces more skimmate than any other skimmer i have tried, and i have tried many. it's much cheaper than building one. if you do plan on building one i would go ahead and build 2 or 3 to make it worth it. other wise it will cost about the same, but no warrenty. the name brand is different on mine but its the same. think mine was a queen skimmer, but really they are the same. i got mine from the LFS. the bid on this one with a pump is at $10. i am sure it will go up but mihgt want to check it out.
