OK, in school, chemistry was not my strong subject so I do have a few questions.

I know that tap water cannot be used-too many baddies in it, we have explored the option of getting an RO or an RO/DI system and those are expensive and produce only a few gallons a day.

Would distilled water work?

What about using a frequently replaced Brita type filter?

As I have read up on this some, I plan on trying to use one of the saltwater mixes that are out there because it will be cheaper per water change.

Distilled water will work fine.

Not sure about Brita water, but it couldn't hurt and has to be better than tap water.

I agree!! Distilled water is fine. About the Brita filter i don't know either. Try to go to ur LFS maybe they sell RO/DI water....or look around ur neighborhood someone might be selling filtered water.....i have one about a mile away from my house and its 50 cents a gallon.

I'd steer clear of the Brita, I don't think it'll remove enough of the impurities. I used bottled distilled for the first year with my nano, it'll be just fine. Walmart's purple cap distilled is 59 cents a gallon. You might want to check with your LFS to see if they sell RO/DI water. Some do and it's relativley inexpensive. In the long run though an RO/DI unit installed in your house would save you the most on your weekly water expense.
