Any reason why I can't make up additional LED lighting ( similiar to the moonlighting I just made up ) for daylighting ?
If I use a mixture of LED's with different wavelenghts ( to create natural sunlight ) .
LED's are reasonable cheap enough to give it a go .
This would be in addition to my tanks existing PC lighting .

you could probably make a board with leds to get what you want but
normal leds ant really bright or powerfull enough to puch through water
for it to be bright enought you would need a lot of leds. i did the calculations once, and the wattage /Lums output just didnt add up, MH out perfored it by far!!
but there is now these super leds out that could make it work maybe
i got a torch(super led) 1W thats 50 X brighters than a normal led
i know they make them up to 5Watts,so is someting to look into i think

that thing looks like something out of sci fi channel I did a little research and saw that there are super leds that can have a wattage of 30. they are expensive though

what do you think of the watt/lum ration?

does that make 6000lm at 300watts?
is that good?

edit just check. its still not up to MH standerds but its not bad
BTW the 5w version gives 120lumins

anybody know what sort of cost we talking about ?
bear in mind that LED's are very efficient and cost would be offset by energy usage.

but not as much as MHs RM
copared to a normal incadecent light yeah they outperfore by far but
MH lights still have the upper hand here.
the problem with LED is that the are basicle unidirectional ans have a lighting cone of 5cms
so to lightup a hole that you would need a lot f em
and if you have anydepth your gonna have to use even more
youll end up using more watts to get a good lighting that you would with MHs
the only thing at the momentthat would off set that is the 60000+ hours that a led can last compared to 3000 something of a MH
