I put a nice clean and new square of of filter-floss in my trickle-filter Sunday. Tonight, Wednesday, it is nearly all brown. I have an actinic 03 light shining on it contantly so that may have contributed.

Anyhow, I decided to remove the floss from the system so I wouldn't have to worry about nitrates building up. I'm sorta lazy in the fact that I don't wanna clean the floss every day and sorta cheap too LOL

What are thoughts on filter floss?

Neglected filter pads will contribute to nitrates, but weekly cleanings will prevent it. But with a good clean up crew, you do not need a filter pad, thought I occasionally put one in during water changes to collect stirred up detritus.

That's a good idea.

go to walmart and buy a bag of quilt batting and cut your own filter pads, i have 5 cannister filters and a diy wet/dry and if i bought ready made filter floss it would break the bank, one bag of quilt batting on the other hand is just a few bucks and lasts me a year

I don't use filter floss, but the foam blocks. They sure do trap alot of funk! I rinse mine weekly and change them out every other week.

I'd like to find a cheaper alternative to those too. Does walmart have anything?

Not that I've found. I get mine from www.petsolutions.com when they are on sale, and order a bunch at a time. Right now I have a whole box full of foam and carbon. :D

I'd REALLY like to find a container that acts as foam AND can hold carbon/etc. That would be killing two birds with one stone.

Hmm...DIY project idea

They make carbon filter floss. Check at your LFS.

Ditto's with Conni....Just make sure that it contains no phosphates and is considered reef ready!!! Some carbon is not good for a reef setting....
