View Full Version : I may have a pistol shrimp
I've been hearing this 'popping' sound for about a week now. I thought it was just the glass thermometer tapping the glass but it definetly isn't. I now know that because I heard it when I was actually looking at the thermometer.
Should I try to catch him or should he be a keeper?

After the lights have been out in the tank for a while, try looking around with a flashlight. You might be able to catch a glimpse of just what's in there. Then you can decide what you ought to do with it.

Thanks Doc! Of course I am!
2639, I have seen mantises come out of LR.com rock, so it is a definite possibility.

ditto on both accounts
look for it at night! if you have a pistol then you got lucky! you should pair it up with a gobie, funny to wacth!
but its very likly you got your self a mantis :x i had a colonie of the and crabs(BTW they click too) that took me 3 months to eradicate
I didn't see anything last night but it could still be very young and hard to see...I have a lot of rock and I now realize that is noe disadvantage of having a lot. :( I'm not worried about anything except the tanks' glass right now. I won't have coral in there for a while. I hve read and heard about Mantis' busting glass :eek2:

Got the pistol shrimp caught!...If I understand everyone correctly, a pistol is a good hitchhiker? If I get a Manderin Goby, they'll buddy up?
Pictures later.
Ten minutes have passed while I was typing...You'll never believe this: I heard more popping from the tub I had the base rock in and I'll be d*mned!! Another pistol!..Went to find him, found him and what'dya know? A 3RD pistol! Whew!
What should I do with these guys?
I also, extracted an urchin, a snail that has an elephant trunk, a HUGE bristle worm and a few tiny crabs.
Yes, I've been busy.

Mandarins are not gobies. They are dragonets and won't pair with a pistol shrimp.
Are you sure you have pistols and not mantises? Can you post a pic?
btw...There is one that looks slightly different but is definetly one of these. He's just a little straiter in the body region.

andy, when i did a freshwater dip on ap eice of liverock i had 1 of those jump out....neat little guy, i knew he wasnt a mantis so i put him in the tank.
i havnt heard any popping noises so far...
I actually remember seeing one of those when I first got the LR...I didn't pay him much mind cause I was so excited about getting my shipment LOL
I havent decided if I want them back in the tank because the popping will get on my last nerve, I'm sure. I have read that they are a good addition to the tank however. I may end up selling these to the LFS or maybe try to unload them here at the forum :D
