Hi, my name is Anne. I am the mother of 2 multiple special health and educational needs children and because of this I am a stay at home mom. My husband teaches for the local public school system.

The reason I am wanting to start a tank is that it is more than likely we will never have the money to travel to see these types of animals in the wild. Because of this, they will never experience the awe, wonder, and suprise that looking at this ecosystem can bring. I am just hoping that in doing a tank, they can experience a little of it. I also know that there are some vital lessons that can be taught and learned. At the very least, I want them to be able to have a chance to glimpse daily into a world that is very different from our own.

Welcome Anne!

Saltwater aquaria is one of the most challenging and rewarding hobbies out there. You have great reasons to get started into it. I recommend reading through our Knowledge Base to get some of the basics before getting started. This can be an expensive hobby, but the key is to go slowly and research before making purchases. Try to get in touch with your local reef club. You can usually come up with some really nice used equipment that way, ending up with better stuff for less money.

As you're learning about the hobby, feel free to ask any questions you need to. This is a family-friendly site, dedicated to helping aquarists in all aspects at every level.

I'm glad you found us!

Thank you for the welcome and I will be posting some equipment needs in the equipment forum. Due to bills regarding the kids, I am trying to do this on a budget that is skinnier than a shoe string.

I am not looking to keep a whole lot in our tank, I would rather have it understocked than have all of the stock I can handle and expenses go through the roof.

Anna, Welcome to the group. This is a great place to learn. You do not know how many times I have wished I knew more before I started. If you shop around you can find the things you will need on the cheap. I advise is to clean out a place to store things you will need and place them as you buy them.
Welcome again and ask any question you can think of. Someone here will give you an answer.
