View Full Version : Am I getting ripped off here?
I won this on ebay for a penny:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7704794857&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOAB:US:6
and now the guy is wanting 20 bucks for shipping! Should I complain? The light is apparantly 2 months old. The auction did not specify a shipping price but I didn't think he'd want 20 dollars for it.

ya that is crap. 20 bucks is way too much for shipping, especially if he didn't state it in the auction. what a greaseball.

It says in the auction that you are to pay actual shipping and insurance. Why don't you find out what means of shipping he is using. Maybe another method would be cheaper. Try to work with him on it.

yeah, usps priority or ups ground should be more than sufficient and MUCH cheaper than 20 dollars

well...it's about roughly half the price of a new one, give or take...
I noticed it said shipping and insurance...tell him you don't want insurance on the bulb, and you want the lowest shipping rate available, that will reduce the shipping costs....check into it yourself, I can't imagine without insurance and on standard ground shipping it would be more than $7-10 to ship it...
Mike
Great advice as always guys...I mean, I can't really complain since it's just a penny but I don't wanna line his pockets either, ya know?

Ya I agree USPS has flat rate shipping boxes that are $7.70 no matter where you ship. And I know one of the box sizes used for that is definitly big enough for the bulb to be shipped in.
He told me that the shipping is 10 and the insurance + packing materials makes another 10.
I asked him to just wrap the bulb in newspaper and don't put insurance on it. I know that when dealers buy these, they don't cost THAT much! otherwise, the store wouldn't make any money!
I hate to be like that but I don't see me paying 20 bucks for shipping!

I understand the 10 for shipping but not for the supplies to ship it in. Believe me I know.

Hmmmmmmmm....still sounds goofy!!!! :(
He may try to say "the auction said ACTUAL SHIPPING CHARGES" but that's where I'll get HIM.. I am just afraid that If I get him to simply ship it, he'll bust it out of spite.

Yep, agreed. I've shipped plenty of stuff and $10 for the supplies is bull. $5 maybe, but he'd have to use alot of bubblewrap and packing peanuts to get to that price.
I may just have to suck it up. Check out the email he sent me:
If you would like to have me ship it in the box with no packaging and no insurance you will be disappointed becuase it will break. Insurance is not required, but I give it up to $100 free of charge. If you don't want the bulb packed with foam and pop paper then you can just pay $15.00 for shipping, but I wouldn't advise it.
Please let me know,
Doug
He's still charging me 15 without all the unecessary packaging. He admitted it was only ten to ship it:
The shipping will be about $10, but the shipping box and extra packaging materials to protect the light will be the balance.
Thank you for your concern,
Doug
I really shouldnt complain but I feel i'm getting raped here.

Well....the bulb didn't cost you...so if you want it...it looks like you will have to bite the bullet!!! :(

Yup, and if it's improperly packaged it will break. If you want it to arrive in one piece, just pay the guy and let him bx it up nicely for you.
Yeah, I've been an eBayer for a LONG time and I just didn't follow the basic rule this time FIND OUT TOTAL SHIPPING BEFOREHAND..
Just one of those things...And STILL, it's a good deal a two month old light :thinkhard:

so the guy gives you insurance up to 100 free of charge? What a nice guy he is considering he isnt paying. UPS insures everything up to 100 free of charge. You only pay for insurance if the value is greater than 100. However, if it arrives broken and the package was packed poorly the insurance will not be honored. If i were you i would just pay the guy but it is greedy and misleading of him to imply that he provides insurance up to 100 free of charge. Not sure about usps but i have a feeling its similar. I hate ebay at times for reasons like this. What is his trader rating like?
Anyways, Good luck.
Ben
That's a good point bengeeee, I knew that but didn't catch it
