View Full Version : Introducing LR to a tank
Is there a recomended way to put LR in? In other words, does it need to be acclimated, soaked to remove all air bubbles, etc?

i give it a rinse in used tank water and remove anything that looks suspicious, some people recommend giving it a freshwater dip to chase out unwanted hitchhikers such as mantis shrimp or bad crabs

Some people do a high salinity dip for 15 min or so...High salinity dip is 1.030
That and scrubbing a bit? I hope I get no mantis shrimp! If I do, i'll be giving them away :D

cich1....doesn't freshwater dip kills the bacteria in LR?
I was thinking the same but I've heard also that it just drives out the loosely planted residents.
I used to hange conchs over a bucket of sea water to get them out of the shells but I'm sure that's not the way to get hitchhikers out of LR!

i'd would think so, i've never done it but i've read some people do.
i've always dealt with unwanted hitch hikers the old fashion way, seak and destroy

the amount of time that the LR is in a dip won't kill all the bacteria in the rock, it will quickly reseed. Another dip that some use that is very effective in driving critters out of the rock is Magnesium Chloride (epsom salts would probably work also) to NSW gravity...they come shooting out of the rock...
