During set up of my aquarium I blindly trusted my LFS guy. Now I have come across several problems that could have been avoided I had known a few things.
Todays question is..... How much water needs to be flowing thru a 90 gallon tank? I have a Sedra 2500 that flows 250 gph. I was trying to install my chiller with another LFS guy and he said that I should have a flow of 900 gph. What do you guys think?

Mmm.. I think Sugar Magnolia answered this in another post....
10-15% of my total gallons. So for a 90 gal tank, it should be at leat 900gph.
I should have searched before I asked!
Yes the "least" amount would be 900gph. Depending on what you are keeping people go all the way up to 30+ turnovers per hour. A good number to shoot for IMO is around 14x per-hour so in your case 1,260gph.

I picked up yesturday the Rio 26hp hyperflow.
I have a 90g tank too, the turnover is at rougly 1200-1300 and it workes great.
It was a little noisy from banging on the sump glass, but i put filter pad under it to muffle the noise and it works great, All I hear now from my sump to hte water coming from my tank and it sounds like a small water fall.
Look into that pump, it works great on my oceanic 90g bowfront tank:)

Thanks Tim. I guess I'll order a new pump and use the old one for the chiller.
Is this flow calculated for a closed loop, ie a wave maker, or for water going to a sump?
