View Full Version : Green hair algae - be related to RO+DI filter from ebay?

I have had my 29 gal tank since middle of Sept 04. At first I was mixing up salt with RO+DI water from LFS. Did not have any green hair algae. Then after many trips (and spilling water in my car trunk everywhere) to the LFS, I decided to purchase the RD 106 filter from Water General which I bought on ebay. It was much cheaper than a system from a company that deals exclusively with aquariums, and many people said they purchased it and were happy with the decisions they made. I had the system installed in Novemebr and started getting gha in Dec - Jan (I slowly transitioned from the LFS RO+DI water to the new water). Now I have all this gha which I cannot seem to get rid of. Is anyone else having this problem - especially people with this system? I don't know what else could be causing this problem - all I know is that it's driving me nuts. I am also not overfeeding the fish. This is a link to a product similar to the the one I bought for around $100.

test some water from your ro/di for nitrates and phosphates and tds if possible

If I'm not mistaken is Total Dissolved Solids.

Thats what it stands for. I got a TDS meter with my RO/DI unit. I got it off ebay too but from a different vendor. You should make sure that the membrane was pushed in all the way too cause mine wasn't. I caught that during a final check of the system before I turned the water on.

Plus, did you throw away the first 5 gallons or so of the water you got from the unit?

Rebecca, if you have a local reef club, see if anyone has a TDS meter you can borrow. My local club has one that makes it's rounds to whoever needs to borrow it.
