I have a wonderfull Red African Sea Star.
When I got him home he was about 3-4", now he is about 6".
So I think I'm doing something right, but my biggest question is what and how much do you feed yours?

When I started with him I tried to feed him krill, claims, and squid. He did not like the claims or squid so I stuck with the krill. At first feeding him 1-2 times a week he seemed happy. As he grew so did his appitite. I now feed him cooked jumbo shrimp for the supermarket. At first I did not like to feed him cooked shrimp and tried raw shrimp but again he did not like it. He would move to eat it and start eating it then stop and leave it. So I stayed with the cooked shrimp and feed him once a week because they where big pieces. Now he wants MORE still. I feed him the shrimp and then about 3-4 days later he goes all over the tank looking for food. I know he is looking for food and not just roaming because if he finds some or a snail its good bye Mr snail! So now, in order to SAVE the poor lifes of my snails, and $2-$3 each I'm feeding him shrimp 2 times a week. He seems happy and is VERY quick to grab up the food.

I don't think he will over eat, I tried to feed him a few times and I guess he was just not hungry because he did not even go for the food.

Any comments? Questions?

Yes I agree cooked is not as good for him as raw.

I was thinking of going back to the krill, which are a lot smaller and feed him more often.

Is this what you have? http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=562

Their diet in the wild is corals, sponges, clams, inverts, etc. It might not be a bad idea to try offering it some fresh seafood from your market's seafood department. Buy a couple of clams, mussels or scallops to see if it will accept those.

Yes, but mine looks a lot nicer. :-D

I have tried feeding him claims and squid, but he just crawls the other way. Maybe I will try to buy some fresh stuff from the market.

I have a chocolate chip star in my reef tank. The guy at my lfs told me he would not bother corals or invertebrates, so I got him. I brought him home and had no problems with him and my corals until last night. I recently added a pumping xenia, and some lime green florida ricordea shrooms. Well, when I got home from my dads, I found the CCS was on top of my shroom. I pulled him off, and he had eaten half of it. He is going back to the lfs tomorrow.

Ouch that hurts
One thing I know for SURE, never trust the LFS, EVER!
The internet and forums are a wonderful thing. Tons of knowledge and opinions.

Hey, you want to send me the rest of that coral, mine should be a little hungy today

They have been know to eat other stars too.

Here is a pic of him after he ate a muscle off a piece of LR.

You should be feeding it meaty items, claims, krill, squid.

When there small they will eat and can live off algea but not when they get older. A good diet is key to keep any healthy pet.

He kinda resembles a crown of thorns starfish.
