I think its a yellow fiji leather- but anyways- when I bought it it had a little black spot- looked kinda sick- but I didnt noticed it until I got home. THe spot has spread and looks like it is killing it. I want some advice on fragging it- should I just use a razor blade? Will it be ok if I cut out the black area? What makes me pissed is that the guy KNEW he was selling me a sick coral- I had no clue- It was my first one. PLEASE HELP!

Do you have a pic? It's really hard to say exactly what the best course of action is without knowing what it looks like. Leathers are easy to frag, but I think Fijis are a little tougher to keep than others.

Yellow Fijis are are a little harder but usually not that hard... I have had mine for several years now and fraged it and given away frags that are doing fine.... I would like to see a picture also... How long have you had it???

This is a pic when they are doing well!!

I will see if I have a pic to show you when they are not doing so good!!!

I just did some research on Yellow Figis. I *think* that Sarcophytons elegans are from Tonga and are hard to keep. Yellow Figi leathers are not elegans, but another Sarcophyton, and are considered to be easy keepers. This is a WWM.com tidbit by Bob Fenner.

You read the same things I do FITD :) ....The Tonga are elegans and from what I have read that must be the case...All though I have never kept the Tonga Sarcophytons so realy don't know that by experience, I guess will leave that to the pro's!! :) The figi are not that hard to keep or frag... I do know that by experience!!! :)
I am very curious to what this black spot looks like and would like to see a picture!!! Sometimes mine will go into a shut down period and will appear to have a darker color to it and then come back to full splendor!!!

I thought I had a picture of this but can't find it!! :(

see if you can siphon the "spot" out. it could be fungus, parasite, dirt, or a beauty mark.

after removing it you should keep it in decent flow (moderate flow-3"~4"/sec.). the golden yellow sarcos (elegans and very similar species) need high light requirements, like many sps do.

sometimes sarcos suffer from fungus (at least i think it's fungus). a dustiness starts developing around their base. this needs to be brushed off (lightly).

debris and crappie needs to be blown off its body/crown. waiting for it to shed takes a lot of energy out of the coral. if you can help it with an occasional blast or intermitent flow the coral is likely to be 'happy'.

i think the 'black spot' is likely a fungus/bacteria. it should be easily removed. parasites are a bit more difficult and often need surgery (you're the surgeon btw), but they're often colored the same as the coral itself.

remove the irritant, whatever it is and give the coral some flow and good lighting. it should perk back up in a few days.

ron- thats what mine looked like- THe little black spot must indeed be a bacterial infection that needs to be removed- is it ok to expose it to air during the surgery? I will cut the black parts out and any other parts that look infected- basically one half. The put it in the upper part of the tank next to the powerhead. Hope it will be ok- wish me the best of surgeryluck!

Good info tiny!

Ron. Enough is enough. You have maxxed out your figi posting quota. Next time I see that thing posted, you'll be charged with a violation of the RLP law* and will be charged accordingly. All fines will be sent directly to me. 1st offense, your fine is a frag of that leather. 2nd offense is a crocea clam. ;)
