Large Zebra Hermit on a Road Trip!

About 3 weeks before I transferred everything out of my 60 gal and 125 gal reef tanks my wife was sitting in front of the TV watching one of her programs and my two little dogs Lucy and Bo went nuts as they saw this critter crawling across the floor… My wife thinking it could be something less than desirable (remember we live in Arizona were there are a few undesirable critters that crawl in the night!!) called me into the family room with that voice that everyone knows means NOW!!! As I approached this critter that was crawling across the floor I was somewhat shocked as I saw this turbo snail shell moving on my living room carpet… Now you need to know that the 60 gal reef tank was in my office on the same floor as the family room but about 60 feet away… As I reached down to pick this critter up it grabbed the carpet and I really had to tug to get it loose!!! What I found was a Zebra Hermit crab in its turbo snail shell home going on a trip!!! I have never had that happen before and probably will never have it happen again!
I find that I am always amazed at what these critters can do and what they can take!!! I have no idea how long this hermit was out of water but he was quite dry!!! I have since taken and transferred him with all his friends into my 300 gal and see him every day as he takes his daily journey in his new home looking for food!!!!

Sometimes, a guy just needs a change of scenery. It was so kind of you to invest in that new setup just to keep your hermit happy!

how did he jump out of the tank?

He had to climb out probably by the HOB skimmer or power head cord!!!! That would be my guess... Of course I didn't see him do it!!!! :)

Lol thats funny. I had a chiton dissapear once, and a few days later i found him on the back of my dresser, still alive?!?.... How can a blue leg fit into a turbo snail shell? Arent they ususally very small?

That's amazing!! Matt, it was a zebra hermit - they get much bigger than the blue legs.

lol ... yeah ... I have zebras in my tank ... I had one that almost got out but I caught him ... he is now @ the lps with a replacement of a blue legged one. I have been noticing that the zebra are a little more aggressive and like to get into a little more trouble!!!!!! (blue) :hmm2: (zebra)
