I have noticed that coralline grows faster on glass and plastic or other smooth surfaces in my tank than anywhere else.
Coralline is going to grow, no matter what...if you wish to slow its growth a bit, then maintain normal NSW Ca and alk levels for your particular SG...don't get too high in these values. It won't grow nearly as fast as in a tank with elevated levels of these. Also, keeping the water as nutrient free as possible will help slow it a bit.

That could do it if you used a lot. Also, what brand of salt do you use?

Unrchins LOVE coraline, but are pretty darn destructive in a reef tank.

how are urchins destructive? I have 2 that have gotten about the size of a golfball.

I kinda like the idea it covers galss faster as i have a tank with the rear window exposed to natural sunlight i think if it covers the back i wont have to worry about the sunlight anymore :) not to mention it looks great as a background

Urchins can knock over rock and knock coral off the rock… they do eat coralline algae… they really like it… I have 3 urchins in my 300 and have to make sure they don’t knock stuff down… So far so good!!!!

Anyone having roblems keeping coraline algae growth?? i have several people with this problem and wonder what people have done to spur its growth..... keep in mind these people are growing SPS and have calcium reactors and maintain high alk and calcium levels..

I think the issue in a tank like that (sps) is likely the high light levels...coralline does not seem to like intense light. Notice that your coralline grows fastest in shady parts of the tank, or on surfaces not directly under the light, but grows much slower on the tops of rocks and other surfaces directly below the lights. When I was trying to save my pearl coral, I put screens between the lights and the tank, in an attempt to boost zoanthelle levels in the coral. I had screens for about 3 weeks over the tank, and the coralline growth literally exploded due to the lower light levels.

I agree with Mike... I have some areas of my 110g that coralline doesn't grow hardly at all. It has elevated alkalinity/ calcium/ magnesium, running ca reactor, dripping kalk, very low PO4s... the ideal environment for coralline growth other than the intense lighting.

Thats a great idea with the screens i just got off the phone with one of the guys at Sea World here in SA that i know and he said he saw better growth when he used 20K lighting with no other actinic supplemetation..... i thought he was weird but after seeing the 250 plus frags in his propagation system with coraline all over the place there i must agree maybe he has a point..... all he uses are XM 400W 20k lights....... sounds like i need to go to the store again!!!!!!!
By the way i am running 250W10k (2) 96W dual blue actinics (2) and 150W 20k (2) so i guess if i get rid of my stuff i was already thinking about going 400W pendants HQI... and seeing if that will do the trick... would i be correct in stating that the HQI put out more PAR????? or would i have better luck with Mogul base?
