I have recently noticed a smell in my living room. Thats where my tank is set up. I am pretty sure it has to be the tank. It is hard to describe -- like a musty smell but not fishy. I just started noticing it after I installed the protien skimmer (I empty every 2-3 days and scrub the collection cup). Is something everyone with a tank is combating?

That's pretty normal when you start using a PS. Just imagine all that junk in your tank, makes you realize how helpful PS are.

I am not sure what type of skimmer you are using, but I don't really notice a smell with mine until I take the cap off the collection cup.....then it reeks! But while the skimmer is running, I don't notice it at all....maybe I am just used to it?

I know my skimmer has a place on top of the cover to put carbon to absorb the smell. It works good so far.

It will get better as you use it..... A fan in the area to move the air or carbon if your PS will accomodate it works well too!!!! :)

that must be it because we didnt notice it until we started using it. It doesnt have an area for carbon ... maybe I just need to clean it daily.

Thanks

I clean mine at least once a week-sometimes twice a week... Most of the time it makes me clean it because it gets full!!!

By the way what kind of PS is it???

ASM ( all seas marine) - from what I understand, it is a product that was originally produced by euroreef but when the company split the other half started marketing the skimmer under this name.

I have an ASM G-3 on my 300…So I am very familiar with it…I don’t get a bad odor until I take the top off the collection cup! Do you have the o-ring in place where the collection cup attaches to the main body???

yes.... but I think my sense of smell is very sensitive. My husband doesnt notice it.

And I smelled gas in my home once and the gas co. checked it out and said that the amount was so little that it was unlikely that anyone would notice it and that it was a normal amount. Sooo, maybe only I can smell it. Hopefully.
