Very nice, I am going to need to get some soon as well. If you never have extra from your fuge let me know.

Will do!! From what I have heard, this stuff it supposed to grow really fast. I'l not sure how much die off there will be though...

Looks like healthy stuff! I bet you don't lose much at all. Congrats!

Thanks Conni... you should have seen the pods and worms float out :o... got some baby snails out of it also.

I'm hoping not much is lost...

That is one HUGE clump of chaeto! It should do really well for you.

04-15-2005, 03:51 PM
Yea, enough for both refuges... no more caulerpa for me :-D

As Conni predicted not much at all if any died... I was a little worried sense it was sent w/o water on a two day trip but it seems to have worked fine.

It does, I only have a small AC 70 fuge on my 2.5 gallon tank and the stuff triples in size in a months time.

So someone clear me up- what is cheato and culpera?

there marco algae's good for pulling organic waste out of your water and lowering your phosphates, and good breeding grounds for pods bristle worms and other micro critters.
Travis I noticed your chaeto is yellowed that's a good sign that it's been under 24/7 lighting, you might want to keep it under that time frame or it will slow down the growth on it a lot, and it will be less efficient.

04-18-2005, 11:03 AM
Good observation!! It was in fact kept under 24/7 lighting. I have also been running my refuge 24/7 but wanted to change it to opposite the tank with the cheato... but that's not a must. Why would changing the lighting time frame slow the growth?? Obviously because it gets less time to grow during a day but is there another reason??

un like calurpa they need a time lapse to thrive, chaeto don't because it's so thick, and I just have noticed that the chaeto I have given to others that put it in there tanks. and only run it under 10 to 12 hrs, does not grow that fast, plus at first before I got my refuge, I had mine in the main tank and it grew pretty good but not fast enough to show much for nutient exporting, once I put it in my refuge and ran 24/7 lighting. my nutients exporting doubled almost tripled, because it was growing 3 times faster in the refuge.

I'm glad you didn't lose much to the travel. Congrats, let's see some more pics when you get the chance

04-18-2005, 11:19 AM
Thank you much!! I'll stick with the 24/7 lighting...

Do Tangs like it?? I was feeding my PT a lot of culpera... but I removed it all over the weekend so I'm hoping it will take a liking to the chaeto??

04-18-2005, 11:23 AM
Thanks BoldAsBrass... o-yea, there will be pics coming :-D

depends, I know of some there Tangs won't touch the chaeto. and others with the same type of tangs can't keep it in there tanks for very long, I just think it all depends of what there lacking in there diets. I have found to the mithrax crab likes chaeto too.
and if you really want it to grow fast and stay nice and dark green, give it a little Iron in it's diet. HeHeHe.
keep use posted.

quick question, ...
do you need special lighting for it to grow well?
starting to think bout refugiums.

icereefer

Not really, I use a 6500k 18 watt PC in my refuge,it's a brighter white light that algaes thrive on. you mostly want good lighting coverage over all of it or you will get areas where the macro will grow tightly and could chock out the others in your refuge and then the macro that will die will start releasing organic waste, phosphates back into your water column and this is why most use macro for nutrient exporting. and feed to or herbivore feeders.

Well my Tang decided he doesn't like it... and I'm pretty sure he's pretty pissed at me for not feeding him macros anymore... poor guy.

Can you put chaeto in your pump? I have an emporer 400, and plenty of room since I took out the bio-wheels. Also, does it float or sink? because i'm thinking about getting some and wanna put it in my main tank.

It's light enough that the current would make it float. I don't see any reason you couldn't put some in the emporer... as long as you have a light over it. I'll send you a little with the zoos.

OS, I'm not a big fan of lettuce but he get plenty of algae sheets. Macros were just cleaner.

Ok! Thanks Travis! Do they need any specific type of light or would just like a lamp work?

06-10-2005, 01:13 PM
Nothing special... I would make sure it's a 5500k or higher lamp. It may even get enough light from the display's lights depending on how it's set up??

I know for mine I just went to the store and got a 65 watt plantgro bulb and my stuff grows like a weed.

Zack, I'm harvesting regularly and getting a good bit each time so if you're still in need let me know.
