i bought a nice 4.5# piece of Vanuatu lr for my nano saturday of course the lfs assureded that it was fully cured so when i got home i decided to clean it up in some used water i had saved from a water change the day before, well in the course of cleaning it i discovered a couple small sponges hidden in the creavices, since this rock had been out of the water and in a bag for over an hour i decided to get rid of the sponges as i didn't want them to die and foul my water. after i cleaned the rock to my satisfaction i decided that maybe i should mix up a fresh bucket of water and leave the rock in with a powerhead overnight, this morning after the new rock had sat for 24 hrs.i tested for ammonia and was shocked to see it had already risen to 5.0 ppm, sure waiting to add something new to our tanks sucks but it would have been far worse to put that rock in my tank right away and lose a $40 fireshrimp, my green clown goby and $100+ worth of corals.
just a heads up to some that think yoo can shortcut in this hobby. in this instance all it cost me was a little time and a cup of salt

whew...good thing you didn't put that rock in the tank! I do the same thing when I buy new rock for the tank. Even if the LFS or reef store assures me that it's cured, I take it home and let it sit in a bucket with a PH and heater for a couple weeks just to be on the safe side.

Ouch.....that could have been a disaster!!! Good choice!!!! Good lesson for all that bring home new pieces of LR...
I have always done the same.... The responsibility realy falls back on us as what goes directly in the tank!!!! :) Good CALL!!!!!
Yeah just cuase they claim its cured too doesnt always mean thats so either.
That could have been a real disaster in a nano reef tank! Glad you thought about that ahead of time and "held short of the active".

I try to set my QT up before I buy anything even LR. Lately I have been buying pieces of "Dead" rock and I stick that in the QT for acouple of weeks just to make sure.

Great job! I'm glad you had the self control to do it right! It's not easy, I know.

it seems to be one of those things a newbie like me doesn't think of, fortunatly for me i suspect everything that goes in my tank and when i smelled the rock i didn't quite like the way it smelled so i'm glad i waited
