hi everyone,
i recently got dooped into buying a seabae clown from the LFS and found ot what any new rookie in this field does, they cannot be mixed with any clown species! WRESTLEMANIA LIVE! anyway i just setup a 5.5 gallon tank for him using a hagen mini i had already in an established tank(wasn,t doing much especially with a skimmer and 2 other filters) and some LR , all were cycled previusly. My water params are ok, but i want to know if this can be called a safe tank; 5.5 gallon with 2 pound of LR and only one clown only, no new additions to come. thanx for your comments.

Yes. You are breaking the rules. That clown should get to six inches, and he will be very cramped in a 5.5G tank. They need to be in a minimum of 30 gallons. If he is small now, and you know you will be getting a bigger tank for him within a year, go for it. If not, try to take him back to the LFS. Maybe they'll trade him for something that works better in your tank.

I would hold off a few days before adding the clown, just to make sure there will be no cycle. Make sure you keep up on your water changes, and things will be okay.

ičll do my best to make this a sucess, and yes i do plan on getting a new tank within the next year so a home for this little fellow should not be a problem, is it that impossible to incorpoate 2 clown species into one tank?

It can be done, but you really need a pretty big tank to pull it off, in order to minimize territory disputes....

ruffly put,
how many ocellaris would you guys concider putting in a 40 gallon tank, keeping in mind the size they will get at maturity? i hear alot about using the fishs length VS tank size to determine the number of fish it can hold, but i can't seem to get a right average number to guide my tank towards.

Anything under 90 gals. I recommend displaying up to two mated clowns, just to minimize territorial issues. As far as more fish, is really up to you. In a tank that size I would add 2 more small fishes.

Tank size vs. Fish size formula doen't work if your not taking into acct. the volume taken by Live Rock and other ornamentals.
