View Full Version : Setting up an HOB refugium--questions

What should I put into the refugium? I know people grow macroalgae in them, but should I have anything else?

What is "Miracle Mud?" Is it just some high-priced nothing, or is it something that would benefit the refugium?

And one more question (for the moment)--currently, I have a glass top on the tank, but it will no longer fit once the new stuff is in place. The lights are on legs (Current USA calls them "Docking mounts," but they are legs) and the legs are adjustable and the lights are quite heavy. I like the glass cover, as it seems to me to be a layer of protection between the water and the lights, particularly when I am moving the lights back onto the tank after doing water changes. In other words--I am a klutz and don't really trust myself not to drop the thing into the tank when I am re-adjusting the legs. Any tips or ideas about that?

Thanks.

As far as miracle mud is concerned... There are lots of people that have used it and have had good success with it... I use a fine sand that is about 3 in deep.... have some LR and lots of Macro in my fuge...

If you have a canopy on the tank see if you can mount the light... Other wise you just have to be careful .............

Here is my fuge as a new set up..

You can put egg crate lighting grid on top of your tank to keep large fish in and large items out. It allows for more light penetration than your glass top. I got my eggcrate at Home Depot for $9 for a 2'x4' panel.

Ron--all I can say is "Wow!"

What are the marks of the side?

Conni--

Thanks--that's a great idea. Only have a clownfish and a purple pseudochromis for fish (until I find a six-line), but they don't seem too interested in jumping. But that shold make me a lot more secure about the lights.

The marks let me know how much evaporation has taken place... Each represents a gal of water to be added to the system...
