my female clown layed eggs today, I just hope there good parents and don't eat there eggs. so far they have been gaurding them real good. this is a picture of the female defending the eggs and the male fanning the eggs.
the only thing I worry about is the hermits but they won't even let them get close to the Anemones, I hope there the same way with there eggs.

Ya it's nice, but the only problem is the fry only have a 3% chance of making it. I'm just not ready yet to prvide for them. I have phytoplankton and will have newly hatched brine for them but I lost my rotifer provider, :(
and I don't have a hatchery tank ready yet, :( .
in the tank there in now has plenty of Anemone and macro cover and not really much for predators, No other fish. except the parents. but I can't be sure on what's in the tank for micro predators.
the key will be if they can stay away from the parents. I'm in the process of panty hoeing all the inlets on my filters and power heads.
and keeping my finger crossed for the fry.
I just wish I had the funs to get my hatchery tank up. :(

it should be soon here, there black now with little white spots on them , I suppose it's there yolk sack.I 've been trying to get pictures but the male won't leave the eggs when I'm any where close to the tank.
myself I hope the parents eat them ,because I lost my rotifer supplier and I would hate to see the little guys stave to death, :( I have phytoplankton, and live baby brine. but rotifers I can't fined here, and I don't have the ments to grow any at this time.

Yeah...I know....start making a list.
It's funny how you get into this hobby because of all the insane bright colors, but then....the black and white percs are so awesome.
Can you keep black percs with regular ones? Hmm!

I know what you mean, my blacks are my favorite, and for mixing them I never tried my pair is a wild caught pair and I know they would of tore my other pair apart.
and believe me I already have a long list on my clowns. but mikej has the first 2. if any make it on this round.

put me on the list :D
good luck i hope they make it!! even if they dont, its possible the clowns will lay eggs again right?
~Matt~
Way to go Icereefer! Good luck with the potential new additions and make sure you document the events well to share with all of us here so we can get smarter! Even with the dismal survival rate of 3%...those are still fine examples of a very unique species, so if only one survives...its truely an worthy accomplishment on your part in no uncertain terms!
Good luck with the project!!!!

believe me I've been trying but when ever I get close with my camera the male won't leave the eggs site. plus the eggs are in the middle of the tank and when I zoom in the picture is so out of focus, but I will keep trying.

I have a question. My LFS has a breeding pair of B&W's but their babies have an orange mouth and are not full b&w. Will this change as they get older? They have quite a few and are very successful at breeding many typs of clowns. However they are never available for questions.

Are you going to try and raise them in that tank or move them to a nursry tank? Good luck!!

However they are never available for questions. is the parents solid black and white? because the ones I have seen when small that have a orange face can go either way the orange will disapier with age or the orange will go from mouth to under the belly to the tail.if these babies are about a inch and a quarter long more then likely that's the color they'll stay.

I will hopefully be ready for the next lay, clowns once they start to lay will lay usally a clutch of eggs a few times, with in the month.

They'll become better parents as they get older (just like the rest of us)! That sure would have shortened Finding Nemo! You'll have some fry soon I bet!

Mine are very good parents, they do there job very well as a pair. they, guard there eggs they fan them. keep the eggs clean.
see in the wild, they have the currents, that will sweep the fry way from the parents. in the tank there not going any where the clowns duties as a parent is to guard the eggs keep them cool, and free of micro preditors, after there fry there not eggs know more and there instink to protect the eggs turn into easy food. that's just life.
this pair has been breeding for about 5or6 years that I know of and I don't have a clue how long they were a pair in the wild.

Hey all , reguarding the orange on the faces, it will go away I'm sure. I've seen it before and it disappered totally. Congrats on the eggs, wait til you see how much work goes withthem for babies. Plan to stock your own phyto, and rotifers. Alot of water changes , or establish alot of baby friendly 8-10 gal tanks. Good luck !

are these your fry?
and are they miss bars are will there lines come together as they get older?
mine were fully bared at that size.
and I have live phyto but using frozen rotifers, and I have Golden pearl. and live baby brine shrimp. and will have 65 gals of water on hand at all times. and 2-10 gals and one 20 gal tank. and will be using bare bone bottom tanks and sponge filters.

Yes they are from a friends tank actually. We are trying new methods and haven't determined whats best yet. Sponge filters seems to be a good method. Also UG filters and crushed coral(knowing not recommended by hobbiest) We feed live rotifers which we breed as well to keep down the amonia. One rotifer in the phtyo tank will crash the tank with rotifers. Extra water on hand is a must as well. We're up to about 25 tanks and more on the way. The work involved is unbelievable really, he bought a bigger house for the project. Phyto feeds rotifers only. Brine fry after they mature a bit. then brine or "first bites" crushed even more. The stripes seem to continue to define themselves, although was told what u see is what u get?

sounds like you have your hands full.
I'm not getting in the business to raise fry, Just to have fun and raise the fry from my true black breeders and hopefully, provide some of my blacks to friends that really want one and some of my hobby side kicks.
I have breed clowns before and have been reading up on them for many years now. I won't breed many, and will keep records of where my blacks go to keep from cross breeding them.
good luck and if you have time. keep use posted on your progress.

Hey Jim its luke what did they breed on? do you have an anenome ? if you can get the piece they layed the eggs on get a 10 gallon tank from wallyworld for 9.99 and fill it with water outta the main tank and get your sponge filter ready in main tank if possible move the piece of rock with the eggs under water to the other tank and use a small power head to blow water off of the eggs and un plug the power head right b4 hatching read this http://user.aol.com/cebrezzie/aquarium/CLOWNFISH.htm
i found this while looking for my damsel breeding stuff cause yellowtail damsels and clownfish are all damsels :-D
florida aquafarms sells live phyto and rotifers i got a hatching in next day or two but have no rotifers to feed them so i just let em go they breed 2 days after the eggs hatch i feed enriched hikari brine and marine flake food every day and every 3 days i feed grated frozen raw shrimp

thanks luke.
I have read that artical and I have about 5 different authors books on breeding clownfish. I've raised colwnfish before ,but I like keeping up with the latest tech.
I use a 20 gal rearing tank and I use 2-10 gal holding tanks and if I get a good hatch I have 2 more 20 gal tanks for stand buys.
I usually use Live rotifers, but I get to much die off on shipping way out here in ND and I just don't have the room here to culture my own. but have found frozen rotifers work well too.and golden pearl 100-200 microns , you just need to target feed them. after there planktonic stage. I start feeding them cyclop-eeze and Live baby brine shrimp. and like CoralAdict posted you need to keep a lot of water on hand to keep up with you water changes. water quality is a must.
