would you be able to use a pump instead of an overflow box? i could use my powerhead to pump water into the sump, and anothero one to pump it back into the tank.

i wouldnt do that
the reason for an overflow box is mainly for pwr outages or other types of flow loss
if you feed pump to the sump were to stop due to an outage there would still be a suction and this could drain the tank into the sump and if the return from the sump were to fail the feed would drain the tank into the sump
this is where the overflow boxs come into play if something were to happen the tank would drain to a level that you choose and then stop till the return pump came back on

tdevil makes a good point another problem would be trying to match the flow of 2 pumps, both pumps would have to pumping the exact amount of water at all times

exactly what I thought tdevil. If one pump fails you'll be pumping water all over the floor. Stick with the overflow box.

nanoman123,
At least your thinking about new stuff. I once had thought of this and changed my mind many many moons ago.
Go with the overflow box.

YOu could pump into the sump and have a gravity feed back to the tank. Thats how my refugium is on my 20L.

leaffish75,
That's also another way I have one of my tanks setup.
I made a glass overflow inside my tank...and have a magdrive pushing water to the refugium and gravity feeding back to the tank.
I thing to think about here, is head pressure of your pump.
