View Full Version : Did I get ripped off? Price I paid for live rock...
I paid close to 300 dollars for 2 pieces each piece was around 12 pounds and 1 was from Haiti and the other was from Fuji. I want to know if this was a good deal or not?
I have 24 pounds of live rock in my tank. How much more do I need to put in to make it sufficient so I can start adding corals and such. Thanks. 37 gallon cube- 24X18X20

There's a lfs in Charlotte, NC that sells "show" rock for $19.99 a lb :eek2: I can't see the difference between it and their cheap($7.99) rock :eek2: . I'll stick with the online rock. Thanks reeferrocks!
I got 2 big pieces that were 12 pounds each at 11.99 per pound.

wow at my lfs its like 7.00 pp for fiji rock and base rock is like if you buy 30 lbs then its 5.50 a pound
thats a little pricy i think if you paid 300 for two rocks
I dont know...I had a really hard time letting go of my cash for a 11 pound (8.00 per a pound) piece of rather impressive cured Tonga/Eva rock that was of excellent shape, heavily coated in Corlline algae and Orange encusting sponges that were still alive and looking great. They werent too happy about being asked to bag it under water in the tank or place it in a container with full of water.
300.00 bucks for 24 pounds, that would be a hard one for me to swallow. I could see 12.50 a pound for a large "Show Piece" sized rock possibly, such as the 34 pound piece of Fiji I have, but thats still pushing it I think...
How was the rock? Lots of life on it? Got pics, maybe?
I guess in the end if it fits you needs and gives the look you needed, then I guess it was worth it....

I think is a normal price, of couse is expensive but normal price depends of the rock.
There os rocks for 6.99 per lbs and 12 dollars per lbs, but the rock for 12 dollar per lbs is realy beautiful, is completed of pink algae.
If your rocks is very pink and very beautiful I think you paid the normal price for a good rock.

wo0t, i have my hookup for LR, my boss will sell it to me for $2.00/lb -20% + tax. The only thing is the rocks are not very big, it may be hard to scape the 80gal tank i have waiting. I may still go to another LFS and get some show rocks. I might be able to call the distro and see if they can send a box of larger rocks too.

The LFS here sells it for $1 per lb of "cultured" live rock. It's not very big though so pretty much anything over a 55 would be out and even then you'd have to be REALLY careful how you stack the rocks.

I pay $1.20 per pound here, but I live in Okinawa, and get local live rock. I got lucky last time I picked some up, and got a rock that weighed in at about 22 pounds by itself. But it's straight out of the ocean, and usually only been out a week or so at most, so there's still all kinds of goodies, like I got 3 sea urchins, about a dozen brittle stars, some other creatures, including a couple of sea slugs, oh yeah, and some of the worst creatures you could get in your tank, only thing I haven't found is a mantis shrimp thankfully. :D :D :D
