Is a Pre-filter into a wet/dry system necessary? Those hang-on boxes with the flossy cylindrical filter surrounding the hose nozzle . . .

unless your tank is drilled or has a built in overflow than yes the hang-on box is necessary, the flossy filter is not though, it will catch alot of particular waste but will require frequent cleaning

Thanks, but is there an alternative? What about keeping a filter sponge, or sock as it exists the tube, rather than hanging on ?

yeah i think they make a 400 micron and a 800 micron filter bag you can tie on your tube. try www.marinedepot.com
