Ok, still fighting the green water problem here. I know it's the tap water, in the process of fixing that. Got the RO/DI filter, just gotta kind of do some work to get it up and running. Wife wants the tank in the basement and the tap upstairs, hopefully be able to work on it next weekend.

But I'm gonna over to the LFS and pick up some of thier RO/DI water. Just talked to them, 35cents a gallon. Wish I had done it sooner.

Question is, when I get the water, I wanna add the salt to it before I put it in the tank. I lack an xtra powerhead right now, the one I have is now attached to a UV filter I have on the tank to help with the green water. Would I be able to use a battery operated bubble maker to kind of stir up the water a bit, and I suppose just stir it up by hand as well as I can before I add it?

Do you think that will work? I'm gonna give it a try, see what happens. Slowly but surely I will get everything going the way it supposed to.

I see no problem in that, just make, sure that you wait for a couple of hours after you mix it just to be on the safe side.

I use a small powerhed and that seems to mix my 7 gall bucket perty well. It is like the smallest one you can buy like 70G/h but I wait a day or two for it to mix. I have also used the bubbler method in the past and it also worked but not as well it seemed (took longer). Hand stirring it is the quickest method IMHO. I always like to wait a day or two though because I use tap water and want to make sure that it is decloriened (that stuff is supposed to be instant but I don't trust it). This also gives a chance for all co2 or other desolved gasses to get out.

Aye hand stirring it now myself, a bit lazy to go back out to buy battieries for the bubbler right now /Yawn

Figure I'll stir it throughout the night, I got a pretty good set up, tank is about 2 feet away from the computer :D

Makes it easy to read up on stuff and check it out at the same time.

i get a bucket with a sealed lid, and put it in the back of my 4x4, then go offroading.

works like a charm ;)

myself I like to use a powerhead,I know you don't have one but you should add your salt to your water and airated for at least 8 hrs,to make sure all your solids are gone. at least thats what I've heard. and I make sure my temp is the same as my main tank too.
but then again I might take things a little more then needs to be done.

ive been stirring it for the past few hours, gonna put a bubble machine overnight, since it's kind of late to do the water change now.

A power head is a goood investment for this in the future. I have gotten several with my buckets of instant ocean salt before. Might think about that next time you buy salt again. Its always great to have a couple of powerheads handy. Its a tool that will easily pay for itself in the future.

I don't know, call me stupid or something. I have never waited to put the water into the tank. Not more than 10 minutes and have never had any adverse effects on my tank. Once the salt is disolved I put it right in, the water is already at temp and like I said I have not had any adverse effects on my livestock. Been doing it this way since day one, well over 3 years ago.

I don't know if I'd call it stupid,if you've done it that way and it's worked well for you great. I did it that way for years myself, I've just got in the habit of doing it that way, because of what I've read and past experance of others.
and since I've been doing it that way "knock on wood" have never had another out break of ick in my tank, not saying it's related to it, but I've always believed if something is working for you, stay with what works.
just my 2 cents
