I have a glass top on my reef but after about 2 days it gets covered in salt creep and no light gets through. Is there any way to avoid this or should I just keep the tank open top? I would like to avoid the evap but I would rather get all the light I payed for.

Thanks,
Whiskey

I use egg crate for my top. When it got warmer, I had to make a drip top-off bucket for evaporation. I lose about a gallon a day, but I'll be able to drip kalk whenever I can find some, so it's a good thing all around. The tank doesn't overheat, light gets through, there's extra moisture in the dry air of my home, and I can slowly dose the tank. The only real negative I can see is that small jumpy fish could probably fit through the squares if they aimed carefully!

Good luck,

Conni

I don't you need to keep a reef tank open so your gases can excape, plus the green tint in most glass canopy's,block a lot of the raises your corals need to survive.

Hmmmm.... Somthing to keep in mind, never heard of that before. I've heard of the gases but I never had that problem.

Conni is right....

I used plexiglass for awhile, but I gave it up. It needs to be cleaned often, and having a top on the tank raised my temperatures....

Salt buildup in my hood is minimal, mainly because I have a fan cooling the hood.

I'd go without a glass hood, unless you have MH's, which typically need to be protected by some sort of sheild.

Mike,

I just love it when you say I'm right! I feel so stupid as I try to figure things out as a newbie in the hobby. Thanks for the positive reinforcement!

I'll chime in here and agree with out a cover. I also have a friend who keeps his top open as well and we both have successful reefs
