View Full Version : Ro/Di water vs. Boiled tap water?

I thought this was interesting. I am getting an Ro/Di system put in my basement with a 50 gallon barrel for obvious reasons. If you boil your tap water, does it purify your water by getting rid of all the nasty stuff tap water has? (nitrate, nitrite, chemicals ect.) Could I possibly save some money on this system if I could just boil my water daily?
Does anyone know if this would work? And of course I know that after I boil it, I wouldn't put it directly in my tank  thanks

actually, boiling can raise the levels of certain undesireables in tap water (based on volume) because you'll lose water to evaporation, and the nasties stay behind...

Really? I thought maybe the heat would kill all. :doubt: When you say (based on volume) what do you mean? The greater the volume of water the more junk left behind, vs a smaller amount boiled would be better?
thanks

Heat kills living things (i.e. cysts, bacteria, microorganisms, etc.) that may be living in your water, but they probably aren't there. If you have "city water," it has been pretreated with chemicals to rid it of the living things. Non-living things (pesticides, additives, heavy metals from pipes, nitrates, silicates, etc.) will not be "killed" or eliminated with heat. Most will remain in your pan as the H2O evaporates, so when you use boiled tapwater as opposed to fresh tapwater, you will have more nasties. Don't waste your effort killing what isn't there!

I hope this helped.

Conni stated it very well.

Now if you could collect the water that evaperates off you would have very pure h20; however the power bill would be through the roof and it would take one heck of a system to evap and collect all the water you would need.
