What size is the ricordia you plan on fragmenting? Also as long as you are careful when removing the ricordia it will be ok. All you have to do is slowly work at the foot of the ricordia and it should release. Just take it slow. That is the key to everything.

You should be able to cut the head off and, then you'll have two frags...the foot will regenerate a head...and the other head, will generate more foot to attach to smaller pieces of rocks...
This is what I do will all my mushrooms ;)

Cut the head...and put it in an area with low flow..so it will stay still and not rock or move...place it on some small gravel/shells/liverock rubble...it will attach within a week, but it can take longer, pending the light and parameters of your tanks water.

I do not recommend cutting the head off of a ricordea. They are considerably different in fragging compared to "normal" discomosa. If it is a ricordea yuma or florida, bisect it down the middle thru the mouth. do not remove it from the rock. You run a pretty good risk of killing it doing some of the other "mushroom" approaches.

Do you just use scissors?

It's best to use a clean, new razor blade.

clean your razor blade with alcohol in case its has oil or something to inhibit rust

I'm never really had an issue with my florida ricordea...
