i am a beginner and planning to set up a 28 gallon aquarium

what kind of filter would you recommend

and should I put in some live rock or live sand or both(does live rock require somekind of special light)

I was thinking of making a seahorse aquarium - but maybe they're too delicate for a beginner - please recommend some animals (starfish?, crabs)

Besides water heater and an air pump are there any more special equipment i would need
(and yes i know about the water tests and that special sea salt)

I know I'll have to do a thorough research before i actually do anything but I would be thankful if you'd give me a few pointers...

Well frist you gotta decide what kind of tank you want... Fish Only, Fish Only With Live Rock, Reef? You really don't need live sand but it helps to speed up your cycle and setting up your bio-filter, live rock is always a plus since it helps also with your filtration and cycle and you never know what little critters might be hitchiking with it (some good, some bad...). :hmm2:

As far as filters is concerned IMO and I beleive most people here will recomend you to get a protein skimmer, and IMO an Emperor would be fine since the biowheel also helps with the bacterial proliferation that sets up your cycle.

Seahorses IMO are a little pain they are too fragile and easily stressed, but there is a lot of people that keep them, but honestly I beleive you should wait until you gain more experience b4 you decide to adopt one of them.

That's my 2 cents for now, just keep checking ur thread I'm sure a lot of people here are more than willing to help a new member.

thanks, but maybe some more experienced can give some advice about what kind of animals/fish I could keep in my 28gallon tank - after that i can decide what i really want and do a research on that certain species and decide what my tank needs....

Well for your filtration you could use Live Sand and Live Rock. This will be all the filtration you will need. One thing about haveing a sea horse is that you will have to have a slow watermovement and have things for the seahorses to hold on to. I would personally reccamend a skimmer for your aquarium. It will help take out excess nutrients and airate the water.
