I have been taking things extremely slow so as to not make many mistakes. Here is my set up so far.

55 gallon 48x12.5x20
60lbs Buna live rock
35lbs Lalo live rock
4-5 inch sand bed
CPR Bak Pak 2R skimmer
2 hagen 802 400gph powerheads
1 200w heater
1 emperor 400

I had the aquarium set up with just the 35lbs of rock but last week I decided to get the Buna rock so now it is going through another cycle which I am perfectly fine with. I am starting to get a diatom bloom which to my understanding is pretty normal. My SG is at 1.024. So far from looking at the equipment what else would you say that I needed.?

What do you plan on having for lighting?

not sure yet on the lights. right now I just have the stock 40w florescent but I was thinking of T5's. Metal Halides aren't out of the question altogether but I would worry a bit about the heat. If I went with metal halides I'd go with either 175DE's or 250SE's. with VHO or T5 actinics.

I'm hearing good things about T5's some say in a tank of my size which is only about 15 inch deep including sand bed you can keep clams with the Tek Light T5's. I'm also liking the fact that they only need to be replaced like once every 1.5-2 years. Its more of an upfront cost than VHO but on the back end its alot cheaper.

I'd definatly love to have MH but like I said the heat is a concern and with this being my first tank I'm not sure if I should be keeping anything that needs that kind of lighting in the first place.
