Hey all,
Just wondering if anyone had a used a product by Marc Weiss called Black Powder. Had noticed it at a few LFS and finally asked about it. From the explanation I got it seems to replace everything you might need to dose into the water eecept a buffer. Just curious if it is any good really?
thanks,
Justin

Avoid the all-in-one magic potion things (especially Marc Weiss stuff)....they rarely deliver what is promised, and just end up costing you $$$. In a reef, you should monitor and suppliment calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium. Everything else can be taken care of by a good regular water change schedule.

It caused more algae when I used it to test it out
i actually disagree 100% i found along with many reefer's/admin on reeflounge great results with the marc weis black powder, spectra vital, and coral vital.
it does not add calcium, iodine, or anything else like that though. it is more like a food for corals, not a supplement.
when using it you will still need to add calcium, stronium, iodine, etc

IMO like condiman and mike said. it's a waste of "money"!! I gave what I had away. most won't use it from the reefers I know.

Greg, honestly you are about the only person I have heard give a positive review on Black Powder :D
Just about every other thing I have ever heard about it states it does nothing more than add excess nutrients to the water and help fuel cyano/algae. I have heard mixed reviews on the spectra vital....I know some soak food in it.
Just my .02$....I wouldn't dump anything in my tank as a suppliment that does not list the ingredients....I mean, whats in the stuff? Who knows?
:D
there are alot of very experienced reefer's that use it. and most all of the experienced reefers i know use it. i would just be one of the many. the same question was posted on the larger board reeflounge 5 days ago and it got alot of different answer's than this. here is just one of the posts from reef lounge. http://www.reeflounge.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11546&highlight=black+powder this one had the most wide range of answer's. if you do a search you find that most of the expert reefer's are using it.
many people dont understand what to get out of a product.
ice reefer, you claim you gave it away? how long did you try it for? nothing happens fast in a reef tank
1. which item were you questioning
black powder
spectra vital
coral vital
2. what were you trying to achieve by using the product?
3. how long did you use this product?
4.how often did you use this product?
alot of people post the same question here that is on reef lounge. i watch both boards and i am surprised at the different answer's i get. i am not claiming to be a expert reefer, but everything i post about i have usually tried, and tried it over a period of time in a stable enviroment.
the tanks that i use the marc weiss products in has 10X's more corals than the other tanks, the corals are brighter/more colorful, and grow faster (no it's not the strain all corals were from the same colony) the coraline algae grows extremely fast, i only use the coral vital when adding new fish to control ich.

(Blackpowder) I used it for about 7 month's in a friends tank I was taking care of when it was hot stuff here but could'nt control the nitrates and algae, I stopped using it and everything went back to normal after a month.
if it works for you great... but I stopped using in the tanks I help with and I don't have the problems I had when I was using it.
just my .02 cents. and A club member here in ND I gave it to threw it away because after using it, he started having algae problems too, after 2 month's. but like I said if it works for you and others great I'm not saying not use it I just don't use it from these problems,I've had with it. and like mike said if I don't know whats' in it I won't use it.

Plus in this hobby there are though's that you'll find will not like a product and others that love it. myself I beleive it all depends on how your tank is set up and what your housing, different salts, sand beds, and just different style of reefing,..... I beleive if it works don't fix it..... and I beleive if you stick to what's working for you, and you can keep a even balance :coolbeans: my tank 37gal Oceanic is mostly natural and it is 1 year old about 2 weeks ago

Well, if it works for you that's great....I'm not saying don't use it..I'm saying I would not use it. :-D

Go to Reef Central (probably the largest reef froum on the net) and type "Marc Weiss" in the search option and see how most of the threads there read...

Yeah, you'll notice general differences in opinions from board to board. Like I said, I'm glad its working for ya...

What do you suppose it does to make them grow faster? Whats the magic ingredient? That's my point on the Black Powder...who knows? Could be steriods...got some Barry Bonds corals growing in there... . But since I don't know what is in it, or how it works, I'm not going to risk putting it in my tank. If he would divulge the ingredients maybe....
Mike
i guess black powder doesent work for the people on this board, as far as typing into reef central "marc weiss i prefer not to visit reef central, most of the people there are book worm idiots that dont know what they are talking about and prefer to argue over nothing then try something and proove a point. all i know is when a reef tank is making you a good profit and is paying for it'self and making you some side cash i wont argue. if i need to spend 15 bucks to gain 200 then so be it. maybe it's steroids.maybe not, but if it is steroids then you have to think, it made barry bonds millions!!!
