Hi I was wondering what metals are reef safe. I know that pure titianium is OK but am not sure about stainless steel. A lot of people (not saltwater aquariums owners) seem to be sure that high grade 316 stainless will definatly not rust. Anyone really know for sure? I am doing a DIY chiller using pelter devices but would rather use stainless steel becuase of cost and availability of titianium pipe.

I don't know that I would use any metal in salt water. I've heard that over time even stainless steel will start to oxidize and can cause weird electrical impulses that may disrupt the fish. That, along with rusting is the reason they stopped making metal aquariums.

i work with metals, and the high grade stainless steel will rust. i have a titanum heater and that is starting to rust so either it isnt titanium, or titanium isnt safe either. but stainless still will rust after time

Not hard to believe that a manufacturer would leave out pertinent information about a product. Ie. the purity of the Stainless or Titanium used. If it is a poor quality alloy, then it may in fact rust or corrode with time. :(

That kinda stinks... A shame that some people will go to all lengths to make a buck. Even to the extent of mis-leading or false advertising their products.

yeah, it was a gen-x heater, dont get them. the pcx 40 pump isgood, but the heater's rust, and the other pumps suck
