ive been cycling my 40 gal tank with live rock now for two weeks. i ahve 110 watts of light on the tank and i keep the ligths on 12 hours a day. the past three days ive seen some red looking algea start on my highest rock and spread down to my substrate and through most of my tank. should i get a few snails for this? if so what kind? .................................................. ....................
and also my skimmer makes a heck of alot of noise. its a seaclone 100. does anyone else have one like it and know any reason why its so loud.

Is the "algae" more red/maroon, or rust/brown in color?
I'd say if it's red you are seeing is probably caynobacteria. Brown is probably a diatom bloom.
Do you use tap water?
I have a seaclone, they are kind of noisy. I solved that by replacing the cheesy air inlet that came with the skimmer with a needle valve....added a few inches of hose on the air intake side and put one of those inline airline air filters (the kind you can stuff cotton or gauze in) on the end....this acts like a muffler of sorts, makes the skimmer much more quiet.

did you acclimate the new lighting? im setting up another 29 with 2 75 vhos. i have to acclimate the lighting since the tank is new and i used tap water. first week i put the lighting on for about 2 hours a day. every week i add an hour or so. thats how i do my light acclimation. to get your algae problem down you can lessen your lighting to about a few hours and add an hour or so every week. and try to get some of the algae off manually so it doesnt make your ammonia going krasy.

ok...I'll try :D
I'm referring to the airline that lets air into the powerhead. It has that air adjustment screw thing on the end, right? I got rid of that air adjustment screw and replaced it with a plastic airline needle valve (or T valve as some call them. ) I added some more airline on the other end of the needle valve (the end that sucks in air ) and put a inline air filter on it. It's nothing more than a plastic bulb with an airline nipple on each end, it opens in the middle and you can put cotton in it...
