I would like to add a flame angel to my 55g reef tank. Does anyone know if they are safe for reefs? What do they eat and do they behave themselves with other non aggresive fish?

I don't have a Flame Angel, but I will eventually. I thought I'd share the information I have so far:

If adequately fed, it is PROBABLY reef safe. There are always exceptions, but Flames have been kept in many reefs. You need to keep a good eye on it and be ready to remove it (or sacrifice your corals!) if it starts picking.

Flame Angels can be aggressive and territorial with new fish, so you want it to be the last fish you add. They know to behave when they're the new kids on the block, but don't like anyone newer, either!

Like I said, this is information from research, not experience, so take it for what it's worth (if anything). Good luck!

Thank you Conni for your information on purchasing a flame angel. I think they are one of the most beautiful fish there is. So with your :) info and what i have read also, last fish for my tank is a flame. I appreciate your post, thanks again! :)

You're welcome, QueenAngel. They're one of my favorites, too!

 I have a Flame Angel. I have mine in my reef and it seems to be fine. I don't have any more algae! I would suggest quarantine for a month before you put it in your tank though. 75% of Flames come with something or other. You don't want to use copper in the QT, not angel friendly. I had mine in a QT for 4 weeks and it seemed fine so I put it in the tank and sure enough a few days later I noticed some discoloring. I now see the ocassional white dot appear and then disappear the next day. I can't treat the tank or get the flame out. I have had it for 2 months and it seems to be doing fine. I think it has learned to live with whatever it has and it has not spread to my 2 clowns. I just feed food enriched with garlic and vitamin c every other day. Cool fish though.

Thanks Jim, and good luck with your angel. I wonder what that is on your flame? White dot? ick?
