View Full Version : Help To Indentify
Hello again all. Thanx to all of those who replied to my last post. This time I need help in identifying a "thingy" in my tank. Several of them. I cannot get a picture of them because of where they are located, but I can give a good description. They are: football shaped, white, somewhat fuzzy-like in appearance, they have small tenticle-like things coming out of the top looking almost like hair. They are anchored to my backbox and a couple anchored to the underside of some of the LR. I don't know what they are. I asked the LFS and they shrugged their shoulders. Anybody like to take a stab at this one????
Thank you again,
-Jim

it's not the best picture because the rock was at the back of my tank, tomorrow I'll try and get a better picture for you but it was lights out before I could get the rock moved.
but if you can tell does it look kind of like this?
that little creamish spot in that creaves.

is this what you are seeing?
If so, they are a type of sponge, and harmless. They come and go in my tank, no apparent reason for growths or dieoffs of them I have been able to find. (photo from reefs.org hithchiker FAQ)

yea that's what I was trying to get a shot of, I'm not sure the true name of them either but I was told there called snowball sponges.and I have noticed they grow like crazy in high calcium

Well now I know what I have. LOL I just noticed two growing on a new piece of LR I put in the tank a couple of weeks ago. It was Figi rock and I thought it might be a sponge.

Well the sponge theory might be working here because I noticed my calcium level is of the charts. I had been adding Liquid Calcium and Strontium into the tank for a while but never tested the calcium until 2 weeks ago and it was well above 500 ppm. Still in the process of trying to get it lowered. However, I do like the new things that come with high calc. ie. tube worms everywhere.
Thanks again for the help guys.

that calcium level will come down on its own...just try to maintain your alkalinity and you'll be ok...
