I am not a big fan of powerheads so I was thinking of changing my setup to a closed loop. But I am not sure and what one really is can anyone explain to me what the details of one is. Or some links to some sites of good examples.

The most common form of a Closed Loop these days is an external pump that intakes from the back of the tank via one or more bulkheads and returns through multiple outlets in the back of the tank. They often incorporate some sort of ballvalve, scwd ect. I also suggest adding a spraybar along the bottom attach to the loop.
Here is an old schematics I drew for closed loop on 110gal tank with
is Ampmaster 2100 pump:

The bottom picture is the back of the tank with closed loop hooked up. I am designing a new one to incorporate and oceans motions device and will be glad to share that with you as well, Condi. www.oceansmotions.com
Sorry for the half-arsed answer today Condi, but its past my bed time:

Excellent Diagram.
Condiman,The operative word is closed.Water comes into the pump directly from the tank and returns directly to the tank, either through a bulk head or over the top.A closed loop can not overflow and is not a concern if you experience a power failure.
