I've never had one, but I've talked to people who have. They say they are fascinating critters, but they will kill anything in the tank with them, they are amazing escape artists, and they don't tend to live too long...

Guys, believe it or not, I actually caught 2 octopus(small ones) in 2 different occassions. The first one was when I still had a marine aquarium around 10 years ago... In the beach, there was a large rock, when I was walking and looking for some fishes, an octo actually swam near it, so I just got it with a net...

It survived in my tank for around 6 months, it usually spends its time hiding, especially in the 2 piece shipwreck decoration(inside it), and its cool cuz when I put some colorless guppies(freshwater) for my lion fish, it will also grab some. At some occassions, I try to tease it with some dead shrimp from the market just at the water line, it will go up and gobble it! It is just dirty white and turns dark at times, when you put your hands near it, it will go in a defensive position - some sort of flower position and turns really dark...

The second one I caught around 2 months ago at another beach. It was around 10:30 pm, low tide, so my sis and her classmate and my dog and I were walking at the puddles... I saw 1 puddle with something squirting water from it... We lighted it with a flashlight, and its mostly sand but I swore I saw an octupi head. So we dug, nothing there... we took away most water, nothing... when we leave it for a while, the pumping/squirting resumes. So we took away as much water from it, stayed back and waited... and after a minute or so, we saw the tentacles, then it came out walking towards another puddle. We right away caught it with a plastic cup... Of course we had to let it go the next morning cuz I am still yet to revive another marine tank...

i had one, edward. he was a bimac. i had hime for around a year and he died exactly a year ago today. i would reccomend one only if you have lots of time and money to spend on it, and a good filtration system. but they are very neat creatures. i trained mine to open baby food jars.

I was at a pet store and they had one. it opened the lid and squirted my girlfriend. She screamed and ran. That will teach her to tap on the glass!

I was in the store where Chuck works about a month ago they had one that had babies!! Not really sure if they made it though. Lets just say they had the momma in one of those pet containers in the tank I would say so it didnt escape kinda felt bad for it but they are pretty neat to watch! Definatly a species tank specimen!

But wont it attack other smaller fishes and shrimps? And if with Lions, wont the Lions attempt to attack it since its soft and probably delicious to them...

Sorry I suppose I should have been more specific I mean like sea horses only species tank it should be an octopus only species tank not really sure it would be a bad thing to have more than one octopus in a tank of acceptable size. And yes they do eat shrimp and other small fish

Yeah! I was thinking of just that lately. An octupus only tank, now wouldnt that rock?! It will be unique and they are not that hard to keep. Problem is that you need lots of rocks or hiding places and they will mostly be hiding during day time.

is it true that an octopus has a short life span?

my friend who works at a LFS bought an octopus and made it fight a mantis shrimp that came in on a peace of his LR. he got the whole fight in video tape. the shrimp was eating a peice of food, when the octo came up, wrapped a tentacle around it, and squezed soo hard that the mantis got cut in half. it was very cool. i love octos, especially the ones my LFS has. there bright blue with lots of yellow spots.

They can live for a while but once they mate they will die or least the female will. Once she is pregant she doesn't eat and after the babies are born she still wont eat. Had a buddy who bought a Octo and a month later it had babies and died.

Well atleast its ok if it dies out of natural causes or to what nature deems. Anyways, does octos need special treatment? On my marine tank and experience with an octo before, it lived quite some time, even if I dont have LRs or have much knowledge.

Maybe I should get one once my tank is set up very soon. Maybe an octopus tank!

Yeah its my salary this Thursday, so Ill probably start buying all the equipment for my tank. And I have been seriously thinking of an octo only tank. Fishermen sell the white ones for $1 while the red with blue ones for $2(but rarer to catch). Problem is, it wouldnt be that attractive since they will hide most in the day. And they can REALLY hide, like really flatten out to the deepest holes.

So anyways, do you guys know what fish are atleast compatible? Cuz if I will have an octo tank, I would atleast put 2-3 fish for decoration during the day.

I go in a certain local beach here which got lots of pump and row boats that fisherman use to catch tropical marine fishes only. I ask them... they even get those horn shark types near Bohol(another island near Cebu for you guys who dont know the place), and saw that red with blue spots in a plastic container for sale.

White ones are indeed pretty common, mostly they sell in market for food. I think you can pretty much catch one in a low tide based on experience... you just have to search carefully...
