someone just gave me a water filter canister. It is brand new in the box. Made by Kenmore. It says its for multi purpose use. Could I use this to filter my SW tank? what kind of filter would I need? Could I use the blue foss pad stuff down in the chamber as a filter? It looks like the kind of filter you might use on your house to clean your tap water. I was thinking I could hook it up to a powerhead to pump through it. Anyone have any ideas? Oh, and the entire thing is made of plastic. with 1/2" inlet/outlet.....

you could get one of those 1 or 5 micron white filters but I am not to sure on how something like this would work. The one thing I worry about is the build up of deterius and causing high nitrates.

yeah i have a 1-micron filter i could try in this thing. I had the same concerns as you but I'm currently running an UGF and I have high Nitrates anyways. It might not hurt to try it. I'll shut the UGF off and test it for a few days I think.

I would be concerned with it clogging very fast, and causing your nitrates to go through the roof. That's just my thoughts on the subject.

I still feel you should get rid of the UGF before your tank gets too far along. You will more than likely have to do it in the near future.

I agree UGF are bad for SW aquariums

My bro-n-law has a 100gallon with a UGF and he has never had issues. I contribute that to the size of the tank. I don't see why this canister would plug up any faster than any other type canister. It is basically the same concept. I am however concerned that it will mess with my Nitrates. My tank has improved over this past week. Ammonia 0, Nitrites .25, Nitrates 20ppm. If nothing else, I'll use the canister to filter my water before adding it to the tank when I do what changes.
